Poisonous Plants such as Poison Ivy and Poison Sumac are commonly found in all three Urban states:  Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.  The allergen found on these plants has an oily substance found on all parts of the plants at all times of the year.  It can stay alive on dead plants, clothing or objects for one to five years.  If you believe an object has come in contact with any of these plants, be sure to wash it properly before using or touching it again.

How to treat dermatitis caused by poisonous plants:

  • Try a cool water compress with a cloth or add baking soda and/or oatmeal to the cloth
  • Anti-itch solutions can be purchased at most pharmacies
  • Do NOT rub your eyes if you come into contact with these plants

Deer ticks, Lone Star ticks and Dog ticks are common in these regions as well.  Deer ticks can carry dangerous Lyme's Disease.  Keep exposed skin covered and use bug repellent with DEET to keep those ticks away.  When coming in from the woods, check for ticks on your skin.

How to remove a tick:

  • Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin's surface as possible
  • Pull upward with steady, even pressure
  • After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol, and iodine scrub, or soap and water
